The huge growth in shipbuilding from 1935 onwards (another arms race leading
into WW2) was fuelled by the abrogation and failure of the Arms Limitation
Treaties from limiting the building of all classes of warships. Sparked by the
Japanese not signing the London 2 Treaty. Battleships went out to 45-50,000 tons
(64,000 in Japans case), cruisers from 10,000 to 15-16,000 tons, every class of
ship got bigger. The smaller Navys like Zealandia could not keep up with the
building prowess of the Major Powers. Zealandia concentrated on a few 'Ships of
force' that its minor forces could fall back on when required. It wasn't until
early 1943 that the Zealandian Navy put together a task force with its 5 major
carriers, a couple of battleships, cruisers and destroyers. This force was
backed with its own 'supply train' led by the CVE's and the older converted
cruisers. This force went under the title of Task Force 50 under American
command.
