RZS Menelcamar (DD-1931)
The Valinor class had mounted the fifth 4" gun in between the funnels,
mimicking the Royal Navy practice. The Zealandian Navy did not like the angles
that position gave that 4" gun. So for the Menelcamar class the fifth mounting
was resited to the end of the afterbridge. This required a rearrangement of the
internal layout when compare to the Valinoy class. The magazines for the 4" had
to be moved and a new superstructure fitted between the torpedoes to mount the
torpedo director and a searchlight. For the Menelcamar class the torpedo
mountings were increased from triple sets to quadruple sets and the 2 pounder
pom-pom mounting was fitted from new.
The gunnery director fitted allowed the 4" to be used as dual purpose weapons,
which had not been the case with the Valinoy class which had only had a low
angle director fitted, the guns having to be used in local control for
anti-aircraft firing. This was corrected in a late 1930's refit.
