Panagaea
Back to Fictional Empires page:
Panagaea was the last sub-continent to be discovered. Sitting in the North
Eastern Pacific basin. The land had been fought over through the 18th and 19th
centuries. The Dutch, German, French, English, all had had control of the land.
Eventually the English prevailed, then came the American Revolution. The land
was fought over again. The Royalists prevailed and Panagaea remained a part of
the British Empire. Fast forward a hundred years to the late 1890's and the slow
but sure rise of Panagaea. It was too far away and hard to get to, to be used as
a drop for convicts. The land had gathered peoples with money to buy swathes of
the land. Rejects from America came and worked. Those who had failed to strike
it rich in the California gold fields came to see if they could find their
Eureka moment in Panagaea.
The temperate climate and gentle rolling lands meant that those who came to
Panagaea, stayed. Prospectors came and investigated the lands. Pockets of all
sorts of minerals, precious metals and gemstones, were located. The seeds of
revolution were found there. The largest deposits were coal and iron. The seeds
needed for the Industrial Revolution. Initially the iron and coal were
transported to Britain, but the transport costs made the value of the iron and
coal almost worthless by the time it arrived. The operators in Panagaea would be
going broke if they continued. Sending product to Britain was stopped. Britain
was not amused. The consensus was to develop local infrastructure to build their
own production lines for everything they required. This is 1840 and to develop
the infrastructure was going to take time. First off they needed to buy the
machines to start the processes, Iron foundries, milling plants, and the staff
needed to run the new machines. The background support staff were also required.
Food shops and the staff to run them. Growing the food to put into the shops.
Each person with a job in Primary industry requires 8-10 people doing other jobs
to support them. It becomes self sustaining, with growth being tied to the
amount of product being sold at home and exported overseas.
One of the first items locally produced was steel rails for the railway system
that was surveyed and laid to connect both the cities and the areas for the
recovery of iron and coal from the land. Once completed these connections also
fuelled the growth of Panagaea. The capital, Resolution, was the main hub for
production of everything. Its position on the edge of the inland sea and the
large bay called Home Cove gave it access to both areas for industry and
residential areas for both high end and lower end of the socio-economic scales.
Houses on the beach and lake side kept the rich and middle classes happy while
the square ranks of laid out houses and townhouses for the workers were a cut
above what could be found in the squalor of the larger cities around the world.
Having seen the problems in other lands, Panagaea had had the chance to take
remedial action before it happened.
I have a very good reason for putting Panagaea dead center in the temperate
zone. That is where the best shipbuilding countries in the world are situated.
If you want the chance to be able to build ships 24/7, then that is the place to
be. In 2024, the largest shipbuilders are in Korea, Japan, and China. They are
all in what I would call the 'Goldilocks' zone. Having the resources to build
your own ships is paramount. If you have to pay someone else for any of your
ingredients, then the cost of production can become too high. 1890's and
Panagaea was ready to wow the world with its creations. Lets see if what I
produce can be called 'wow'.
