RPN Albacore (DD-1924)
The next ten years of destroyer construction were all under the Washington
Treaty which gave a size of 1500 tons for destroyers. Like all of the Treaty
limits, it was found that there was a large difference between what you wanted
to build and what you were allowed to build. Most Navies ended up with very
similar solutions to the 1500 ton problem. Four main guns, two sets of torpedoes
and speed of 34-36 knots. That was a basic ship. Some navies had more guns and
less torpedoes, slower speeds. Whatever made their slide rules add up to the '1500'
tons.
The Albacore type was well liked. It was not till 1930 that the ships looked
like the above drawing. Things like the quad 2 pounder took awhile before they
came down to destroyers, the cruisers and capital ships had first dibs on
production. The first eight ships were completed with triple mountings of
torpedoes, then the rest of the class had quadruple sets. The mid 1930's also
saw the fitting of sophisticated gun directors. Asdic and better quality depth
charges were fitted in the late 1930's along with the 20mm Hispano-Suiza
cannons. WW2 starts and the main upgrades are to the ships electronics. It is
not until 1942 tat a major change will be made to the armament when the twin
Bofors 40mm start coming into service. With 29 ships to service its takes a
while before they are all refitted. Three had been lost before the final refits
took place.
The major change was the removal of one bank of torpedoes to open up space for
more AA guns, depth charges and throwers. Hedgehog mortars would be placed
beside the bridge.
