The Search For My Next Empire

The search goes on.

It is becoming more difficult to find a new home for my Fictional Empires. The list of continental fragments like Zealandia and Tyrrhenia is running out. The last piece I have is "Lemuria" which is supposed to be a 'lost' continent between the bottom of India, stretching across towards Africa. Various searches were done in the 1800's for signs of Lemuria but none was found. Later oceanographic surveys confirmed these results. So it remains 'lost'. I will have to 'find' it again. I will have a look at the area with all the small islands and join the dots to make a decent sized country. Then to figure out population demographics and resources. What fun, what fun.

I may have to 'raise' some iron ore with the rest of the land. No iron ore shown in the middle of the Indian Ocean!

Anyway, that is what I am working on while I also play with a few cruisers and capital ships just to keep my hand in.

One of the main requirements for my Fictional Empires, is access to home grown iron ore which can be refined into steel. Modern warfare requires steel, lots of steel.

Below is a map of world iron ore deposits. If I use a real part of the world - rename it and use it for a Fictional Empire then it needs to be somewhere iron ore is abundant.

The area I am looking at is the Thailand-Laos-Cambodia-Vietnam-Malaya region of South East Asia. It has iron ore available, but the area is 'hot'. Working iron ore into steel in the temperatures that occur in that region is going to be tough. That it happens is shown by the steel implements and weapons that they have during the middle ages. What I have to do now is to investigate the 'heavy' industry and manufacturing centers, to see if building ships is possible. I know Singapore builds ships, but I will have a look at how they do it.

After that I have to see if I can unite the people of the area into one cohesive group. 'Warlords' are still a problem today. One of the drawbacks I can see is the passing of information between towns and cities through the jungle of the area. Put up telegraph lines, and the copper wire is so useful for other things. Putting train lines through the same region is going to be just as bad.

For my purposes, in the same area, I would probably add Sumatra with its oil deposits which would be needed in the future for warship propulsion.

Anybody that has some knowledge that could help, please contact me at:  nigevids@gmail.com

Thanks
