KM A-01 (TB-1930)
Back to Germanic States Navy page:
Half a dozen of the A type torpedo boats were allowed to be kept after the
1919 and 1923 treaties. These small torpedo boats were used hard and were
given to the Police Marine unit for use as patrol vessels intercepting boats
trying to leave or enter German waters. This type of vessel was one the Germans
liked for use in the Baltic and North Sea / English channel areas, so they were
happy to build replacements during the 1930's. The 'A' designation stood for
"Aktion' boats.
With two 88mm/L56 dual purpose guns they had weapons that could help in
getting themselves in close to their intended targets. The six torpedo tubes
were mounted one either side of the bow in fixed positions firing forward, while
the other four were sited in two twin sets amidships. The light AA were
extremely useful in the English Channel fighting off the Commonwealth MTB's and
MGB's.
