HMAS Longreach (DDE-1917 (1937-mod)
The remaining 6 of 16 R class destroyers were modified into destroyer escorts from 1935 onwards. One set of torpedoes were removed, the 4" guns refurbished onto AA mountings with shields but only two were fitted in A and X positions the Y mounting being removed. The light AA was increased with 4-6 20mm being fitted. Speed was kept the same and the ships remained useful in auxiliary roles. Many a convoy on the Perth to Durban or Perth to Aden routes were happy to see these old fashioned ships in company with them.
