CUS Maitland (DDE-1942)
Back to Commonwealth Union of America ship list:
The Maitland class was already under construction when the previous Colborne class was completed. The replacement of the single 4" with the single turreted 4.5" guns meant a large change was required to the layout of the armament. Overall the Maitlands were a much more capable ship than the Colbornes and production only ceased and orders being placed when wars end was in sight.
In one memorable duel, half a dozen Maitland and Colborne class DDE's fought off a Japanese Battlefleet that was trying to get to the transports they were protecting. Smoke and torpedo attack feints kept the Japs off till a full air attack forced the Japs to back off and retire.
