BNS Roraima (CL-1936)
Specifically designed as 'Patrol' cruisers, these ships were to trudge up and down the coast of Brazil checking for contraband, people smugglers and all of the other nefarious activities man can do at sea.
The ships were broad for their length of hull to take the triple 6" turrets
and also to enable the secondary armament to be the twin 4" turrets which did
require a wider hull. These
were not to be fast ships and a speed of 28-30 knots was considered satisfactory
for their role. The ships excellent AA armament for their size meant they could
operate closer to the coast than some of the older classes. Armour was standard
except the deck armour which was about an inch thicker than contemporaries.
Because of the excellent AA weaponry the ships were kept with the aircraft
carriers. The value of the Brazilian carriers required the best escorts.
I designed these originally to be an alternative to the similar sized Arethusa
class. Having the two triples, instead of three twins, allowed me to add the two
extra twin 4" mountings and making them turrets.
