Like a lot of other nations, Atlantis trialed full automatic guns. The three Andromeda class cruisers were the results of those trials. A new 5" twin automatic weapon system and a new 51mm (2") Auto-cannon were the armament. To make the most of those new weapons required a large amount of controller equipment for locating and targeting both sea and air targets.
Using an auto 5" would require tremendous amounts of ammunition to feed the 8 guns of the above drawing.
