The Sirius class Destroyer escorts were under construction but taking too long to produce. The answer was to take the Sirius type and dumb it down for faster production times. The new design would be of the Frigate type with no torpedoes. The ships would use recycled weapons, 2 x single 4" on an AA mounting, that would also allow for firing at submarines that may be caught on the surface.. They would look like the Sirius class, same bridge, funnel, aft-bridge, and layout. The same machinery package would be used for the long range the diesels gave the ships. The ships would be shorter and not as broad, They would not require the bigger and heavier dual purpose director.

The class proved very durable and were excellent convoy escorts. The ships were associated with 16 1/2 sub kills. 12 were clean class kills while the other 4 1/2 were made up of bits, where one of the class may have participated in the destruction of a sub with one-two-three other ships. Quite a few of these ships became the Coastal Patrol force after the war, and spent many years trudging round the coast of Antarctica. The rest were sold off or scrapped.

Diesel Engines were known for their frugalness on fuel consumption. A great benefit for escorts.
