Miserable Conditions in Taranaki

Another Wednesday out on the fairways and greens of Inglewood Golf Course. The conditions were not nice, cold southerly wind at 35-40k's. I had a text from Al that morning to say the conditions were miserable so he was staying home. I thought 'Whimp', saddled up the buggy and off I went.

I got to the course, and nearly went home again. It was miserable. I said to myself 'Harden up', got the buggy out of the car and went and signed in, paid my entry fee, and joined three others for the days fun.

Today's foursome contained none of the usual suspects, they all stayed home. Today's group was Shaun Hitchcock, Trev Terry, and Chuck DeMeyer. The names should be familiar as all have featured on other days. Shaun was the lowest handicap and I was highest so we were paired for the fight for the beer.

To put it nicely we all struggled in the conditions. Shaun has quite a 'power fade' which he plays for. But on this day it became a horrendous slice that got him from one side of the fairway into the trees on the other side of the next fairway over. Watching Shaun extract himself from some of the positions he got himself into was quite educational. Trev is also a single figure handicap and also struggled with the weather. Trev ended up with 24 points for the day and Shaun 28.

Chuck and I both had our own struggles but managed to keep our balls mainly on the right fairways. We both had problems on some of the harder holes. I had two holes where I scored no points, but managed to end up with 33 points for the day. As did Chuck. We both scored 17 points on the front and 16 on the back.

We got into the clubhouse and were having our drinks, which we won, Shaun has the Golf App on his phone and was counting down the number of cards outstanding, which got down to one left - he had 30 points, and the results were in. I had won on countback from Chuck in second. I got the $30 voucher and he got the cash.

Winning with 33 points was unexpected. The days conditions were horrible. The cold southerly wind was bad enough, but on the odd occasion a bit of spit would come through and twice we had short sharp showers which we hid in the trees from. Umbrellas were useless. Open your umbrella and it would blow itself out. We were glad to finish the round and get inside.

Marja took a photo over the back fence showing the mountain all white. That's how cold it had been, freezing!
