Best Round Since March 2025

It is not often that I shoot under 80 nowadays. The old body is not giving its best any more. Joys of growing old. So when I do shoot under 80 I am very pleased with myself and happy to get the accolades that come with a good round. Best accolade of course is the cold hard cash that goes with a good score.

On the first tee, all rugged up, the wind is from the south and blowing cold. The day started off in a good way. Last few rounds I have scored no points on the first hole, giving the field a good advantage. Today, Birdie! 3 points. Great start. Too pleased with myself, and double bogey the second hole. Still scoring though, 1 point. Onto the third hole - short Par-4. Laid up with a three wood, got out my sand wedge and put my second shot 10cm from the pin. Yee hah! tap in birdie. Also on the third is a prize for the 'nearest the pin' second shot on the hole. I did not find out till Saturday that my shot had held the prize, $5.00. The day was getting better.

Parred the 4th hole after a mediocre drive, good second shot, the third chip shot needed to be good as I had not even made it to the green after two shots. It was and my ball ended up a meter from the pin which I managed to putt for my four. The 5th hole, Par-3. Had a surprisingly good tee shot which ended up on the green. Walking up to the green, the thought is "a chance of a two". I wander round the green a bit and have a look at the slope to the hole. Three meter downhill, sidehill, putt. So both pace and line had to be correct for the ball to go in. Stroke the putt and off it went, past the hole by five meters, gutted! Nah, Nah, fooled ya! Stroked the putt beautifully right in the middle of the hole, birdie two, four points scored!

That was the highlights of my day. Three birdies, for ten points. Magnificent start to the round. You can see from today's 'card' that I scored on every hole which does help to make a good day into a 'Red Letter Day'.

Birdied Holes 1., 3., and 5. for the start of a very good day.

We finished the round and went in for a drink. Not unsurprisingly the opposition bought the beers. We were the first group in and my score of 42 points looked very good at the top of the tree while the other groups trickled in and their scores appeared on the scoreboard. Drinks over I went to leave and the Convenor stops me and asks if I am happy with the $30 Oscars voucher to which I replied "Yes". He thought I had it won already. Conditions had been a bit tough so my score did look good.

My Partner in crime for the day was Chris Hill. Ten days ago Chris had a hole-in-one on the 5th, the same hole I only managed to birdie. Well done Chris!

I get home and open the Golf App to see what's what. I have been demoted to second. My good friend, Captain Alan Eichstaedt, has scored the same 42 point score and has got first 'on count back'. Oh well, cash is probably better than the voucher. With the closest to the pin prize I have gathered $30 for the day. Not unpleased at all.

Three birdies on the day. Scored on every hole. Definitely a Red Letter Day!
