Some days are really magical out on the golf course. Though my magical time did
not start till the second nine.
Senior Pennants pit teams of six against each other. Today we played Te Ngutu
Black. Steve Wood and I were our teams number one and two. Steve on 14, me on
15. We played Frank and Robbie who also were on a 14 and 15 as the number one
and two for Te Ngutu. On paper there was nothing in it. But we had the home
course advantage.
Steve and I combined well and if we couldn't win a hole we at least halved it.
Our poor opposition was having real trouble. Their greens were really slick and
ours were slow in comparison. They never adjusted and it made it easier for
Steve and I. We had started on the 10th hole and played the back nine first. We
did well and were four up by the 18th hole.
On to the front nine. The first hole started with a drive into the rough on the
right. Had to do a recovery shot where I could keep it low and slice it around
the tree in front of me. Gave it a whack and it scuttled down the fairway, and
just kept going. I got down to where it had finished and after two so so shots I
was 90 meters from the green. That is a pitching wedge for me. Lined it up,
stroked it nicely, up it went, pitched on the front of the green, rolling in
line with the hole, hits the pin and drops in. Eagle three!! Double Yee Hah!!
Our opposition had not even got onto the green for three. Easy peasy.
The good holes kept coming, birdied the third and got pars on a lot of other
holes. Par for the front nine is 34 shots and that is what I took, 34 shots. I
was very pleased with myself. I don't often par either nine holes.
We finished the match a couple of holes later with a 7up and 5 to go victory.
Our team won two matches and halved the third.
Tale of the tape for me was a 41 on the back nine followed by a 34 on the front
nine for a 75 total. Take my handicap of 15 off that and I ended up with a nett
60. That helped our team to number one on the day so it was definitely worth
doing. I also had the best nett on the day so that should get me a small prize
of some kind.
My last three rounds have just been getting better and better. This round
will cost me another shot or two off my handicap.
Nice to see my name at the top of the tree.
A day that will live in my memory for some time to come.
