BAV Barquisimeto (DD-1934+)

The Barquisimeto shares the same hull as the San Carlos class but the main armament was increased to six 5.1" guns in 3 twin turrets. This rearrangement of the main armament allowed for a redesign of the upperworks as well so the two classes although sharing many similar parts did not look very similar.

The triple torpedo tubes of the previous class were replaced with two quadruple sets for this class. The quad 1.1" proved disappointing in service and was replaced with either twin 20mm or single 40mm to complement the three twin 40mm mountings.

The class was built in 3 sets of four units with the first four being laid down in 1931/32, next four 1935/36 and the last four 1938/39. This small gap allowed for minor design changes to the light AA armament as new weaponry beacame available.
