HMS Anson (BB-1929)
Back to Special Projects page:
Following on from the previous
Howe Class
design was the Anson type. The Howe class had three triple turrets of the Mk.2
16" guns which gave it a parity to the Majestic Class. The design featured a new
triple 6" for the anti-torpedoboat/destroyer armament. The five turrets took up
a lot of inline space. Reducing the 6" to just four broadside turrets would
allow for a greater ten gun 16" armament using two twin and two triple turrets.
Two ten gun ships in the Royal Navy would definitely outclass the Colorado and
Nagato class which these ships would be built to be equivalent to. (In real life
the equivalents would be the Nelson and Rodney.)
These are definitely powerful ships and would be the gold standard till the
later 1930's fast battleships eclipsed them. I don't mind the drawing, it has
come out ok, it is the aft end around the after bridge and mainmast that it
feels that the secondary and AA weapons are all in a too tight a space. But that
is only compared to the front half secondary / AA placement. I could probably
have moved the drop boat further back and placed all of the 4.7" in one row.
Once I replace the 6", 4.7" combo with a dual purpose armament, the space looks
much better laid out. The Howe drawings I did not even contemplate putting
aircraft aboard though I did consider putting a crossdeck catapult in place of
the boat stack and the hangars either side of the funnel. I could do the same
here with the Anson. The other way would be to put a catapult on top of X turret
with the handling crane(s) replacing the 2 pounder mounting on the after bridge.
I have not put a priority of aircraft on board the Howe and Anson types, as they
would be the Fleet Flagships of the Atlantic (Home) Fleet and Mediterranean
Fleet which always had aircraft carriers with them to supply the recon aircraft.
