PCS Narva River (Escort-1937)
Return to Polithstovian Navy Page:
The River class escorts were an off-the-shelf design for a long range colonial escort. The Polithstovian Navy altered the design to suit their requirements. The low power diesels were removed and the bunkerage reduced to allow the fitting of high speed diesels of Swedish design. This gave the ships the respectable speed of 24 knots. The design originally had three low angle 4.7" guns and these were replaced with two twin 4" high angle mountings which gave the ships a heavy AA armament. The light armament of four 20mm AA cannons was augmented greatly during the war. All four units went to Great Britain with the escaping fleet and spent their wars acting as coastal convoy escorts. Their size meant that in most cases they were used as the convoy commanders vessel as well.
Of the four units built, only two survived the war, one was lost to German S and A boats in the Channel, the other sunk in Harwich harbour by air attack.
Late in the war the ships were re-rated as Frigates.
