HNLMS De With (DDL-1938)
The De With class were in between the Tromp class and Van Ghent class. Classed as destroyer leaders the ships were able to act by themselves or as leaders to the half flotillas. Two half flotillas and a Tromp type would give a full destroyer squadron that would be the main escort for the Doorman and a battlecruiser.
Ships of this size in other navies were carrying 8 gun main armaments (Tribal, Porter, Somers) while these four ships sacrificed the extra main turret for more speed and a heavier AA armament.
All four completed ships were in the East Indies when war came to the Netherlands and the ships remained under Dutch orders from the Admiral in charge East Indies Fleet. A second set of half sisters, the Gerard Callenburgh Class were still under construction when the Netherlands were over run. These ships would have had a different silhouette and armament while sharing the same dimensions.
