GNS Pepper (ESC-1940)

page:
The Pepper Class were to be multi-role combat craft. They were to be able to
undertake offensive minelaying, high speed minesweeping, fast attack craft,
escorts, but not all at the same time. Removable rails for the mines, easily
changed out racks for depth charges, removable minesweeping gear, only the bow
mounted torpedo tubes were a permanent fixture. These tubes were mounted either
side of the bow with a reload for each tube.
The Greenlandian Naval High Command liked this class, and used it mainly in the
offensive Minelaying role. Along the European North Sea coast, the Norwegian
leads, and around the Mediterranean, these were the hunting grounds for the
Pepper class. Without its mines or other gear aft, the ships were used as the
big ships behind the MTB's and other light craft. An E-boat suddenly finding
itself under fire from a Pepper would turn and run.
The other major role was as a fast transport with goods for Malta. The Peppers
could carry enough fuel to go from Gibraltar to Malta and back, saving the fuel
at Malta for more pressing needs.
