GNS Marquad (BC-1936)

page:
The Greenlandian Navy had had the Gisco class ships in service for over 15
years. There were still six triple 12" turrets left over from when the Hadad and
Manuzi were converted to aircraft carriers. The Gisco class had proved
successful in their role as flagships to the cruiser squadrons. Greenland was
looking to build new capital ships once the 1930 treaty failures happened.
Putting it all together, building two new battlecruisers utilising the remaining
six turrets was deemed to be a good thing. 15 years of running the Gisco class
gave some improvements built into the new ships.
The Greenlandian Navy had not been that convinced of the merit of the one turret
forward and two turrets aft layout of the Gisco class. Greenland Naval ships
chase, they are not chased. The Marquad class went back to the conventional two
forward one aft layout.
Well those drawings turned out very nicely. A battlecruiser with 9x12" at nearly
700 feet seems right for the age. Only 8 years later the US completed the Alaska
at just over 800 feet with the same main armament. Would this ship have been a
match for the 9x11" armed Scharnhorst? Probably not. The Scharnhorst was built
and armoured as a battleship but was more a hybrid. When it came up against a
real battleship with much better technical superiority there was only going to
be one end.
These two ships were meant to join the Gisco class as Cruiser Squadron
Flagships, but instead became escort Flagships to the Greenlandian Aircraft
Carrier Groups. In this role they stayed tied to the Fleet. The only time they
went to the cruiser squadrons was when one of the Gisco class were going to be
in port for an extended time.
