These ships were duplicates of the previous Dewey class but introduced the first dual purpose armament to destroyers for the Confederate States Navy. Three twin 3.9" mountings with shields were fitted in place of the four single 5.1" of the Dewey class. The other important upgrade was to fit quadruple torpedo mountings in place of the Dewey classes triple mountings.
the deletion of the Y 5.1" mounting on the quarterdeck made room for a more comprehensive ASW depth charge outfit. Continual upgrades over the service life of the ships altered them a lot. Some had the A mounting replaced with a Hedgehog mounting. All had many radar updates.
