CSS McKinley (DDL-1934+)
Back to Condfederate States List
Built to compete with the large French, German and Italian destroyers built during the mid-30's. Twenty years before these ships would have been classed as cruisers, now they were just large destroyers. Used almost exclusively as escorts to the large aircraft carriers where their heavy AA battery and good ASW outfit made them excellent investments.
First Confederate Navy ships to have the new French sourced twin 5.1" fitted. Light AA went from the original 0.5" machine guns and 1.1" quad mountings, these were upgraded to twin and quad 40mm with 20mm singles mounted before the fore and aft superstructures. A heavy torpedo armament of four triple 21" mountings rounded out a heavy armament. The above weapons and radar outfit is from 1943, note the hedgehog in front of the bridge.
