CSS Los Angeles (CA-1928 (1941-refit))
Back to Condfederate States List
Confederate States Navy first try at a 'Treaty' cruiser under the 10,000 ton and 8" gun limits. Like all of the CSN ships the Los Angeles type was fast, making 33 knots on trials. This speed however was reached at a compromise, the compromise being armour. Boxes of 4" armour were fitted around the magazines while the propulsion rooms received 3" armour protection. the rest of the ship made do with 1.5" splinter protection while the deck armour was 1.5". More strength to the ship frames was required to stop the length of the ship buckling under the high speed runs in heavier weather.
The Los Angeles gave the CSN designers their first cross deck catapult ship and this was copied into other cruisers and capital ships. The original secondary armament consisted of eight 3" guns on AA mountings. These guns were replaced with the twin 3.9" guns and shields in the mid 30's when the weapons became available. The bridge superstructure retained its tripod mast and spotting top throughout the ships service life. These were good looking ships with the long forecastle giving notice to the speed of the ships.
