CSS Glass (DD-1940)
Back to Condfederate States List
The Glass class destroyers were the Confederate States Navies version of a War Emergency Design, the basic design was an upgraded Dewey / Sigsbee design with the most modern equipment replacing the 1920's gear of those ships. The design was first put together in 1938 with the first four ships ordered mid-1938 for completion in 1940. Another 8 were ordered in 1939 and on the out break of war more and more of the class were ordered till the Schley class replaced the Glass class in production in mid-1943.
The ships were of a simple design and construction techniques to aid in the mass production of the class. The class performed extremely well in service in all theaters of war. From the freezing cold of the Arctic/Russian convoys, to the searing heat and humidity of the Indies and Phillipines. The margin of buoyancy built into the design allowed a lot of additional equipment to be fitted before measures had to be taken to reduce topweight.
