CSS Dewey (DD-1925)
Back to Condfederate States List
First of the post-war destroyers. Like other navies the armament of two fore and two aft was standard for these vessels. This armament arrangement for destroyers was pioneered by the UK VW class DD's. The Confederate States navy built their destroyers in groups of four with two years of production giving a full flotilla. Additional flotilla leaders were not built as these ships were considered big enough to carry their own Captain D. Eventually the McKinley class DDL's were used with these vessels to create flotillas of 5 vessels.
The biggest change made to these vessels was the uprading of the gun mountings to give and eighty degree elevation to make them dual purpose guns. this work was carried out during normal refits of the class from 1938 to 1940. The ships proved good investments and with radar and asdic fitted to the ships through the refit system they kept improving.
