HMS Marshal Soult (Mon-1915)
Back to Commonwealth Ships List
The Marshal clas monitors were as good as the others except for one thing - their engines were unreliable and while the ships were designed for 9-10 knots, neither ship made more than 6 knots on trials. Both ships were used exclusively in WW1 to support the end of the Army line nearest Dover. This meant they had very little distance to travel and they could even be towed into position.
The end of WW1 saw the end of the ships usefulness and they became first accomodation ships and then Anti-aircraft and accomodation ships at Dover and Southampton. The fifteen inch guns turrets and barbettes were removed and fitted to the later Havelock class monitors built in the 1930's.
