HMS Gorgon (Mon-1922 (1938-mod))
Back to Commonwealth Ships List
With the building of the light battlecruiser Furious and its subsequent conversion to an aircraft carrier, left the question of what to do with the 3 single 18" turrets and guns built for it. As a short term answer the turrets were fixed in place on the back end of the Lord Clive monitors. This was less than satisfactory and in 1917 a new monitor of the Erebus type was laid down to take one of the 18" weapons. This ship was to be followed by two others but these were cancelled when the war disappeared from the coast in 1917.
The final two guns being made part of the defenses at Dover and Singapore. The ship was taken in hand in 1936 for modification to upgrade the AA weaponry the deck armour and the propulsion systems.
