HMS Adventure (ML-1928)
Back to Commonwealth Ships List
The Adventure class ships were not built for offensive minelaying, they were to slow for that. They were built to close as many of the exits from the North Sea as possible. This would be done in conjunction with ships such as the Bristol type. To do this in a reasonable period of time a huge mine deck was fitted capable of taking 400+ mines. These were the replacements for the Princess class ships sold to Australis.
Please note that the mine shown at the mine door is for display only, it would not normally be visible
The Adventures were to be fitted with defensive armament only, the main armament being the same 4.7" AA mounting fitted to the recently completed Nelson class battleships. The AA armament originally had 2 x quad pom pom mountings and 4 quad 0.5" mg mountings. The pom poms were retained while the 0.5" were replaced with 20mm Oerlikons during the late 30's.
