HMS Douglas (DD-1918 (1937-mod))
Back to Commonwealth Ships List
The Admiralty and Thornycroft type leaders were very useful to act with the VW and other older destroyers. From 1936 onwards the RN and Canadian ships underwent conversions from having low angle 4.7" to 4" HA/LA DP mountings. The Australis Navy ships had a different program with their ships being fitted with the light twin 4.5" turret. The Royal Navy ships stuck with the 4" as they were not able to produce enough 4.5" turrets to allow them to fit them to the older destroyers.
The Royal and Canadian Navy ships were rebuilt in one of two differing styles. The first (as above) had two twin 4" mounted fore and aft in tubs, with a quad set of 2 pounder pom poms replacing the between the funnels gun. This also retained both sets of torpedo tubes. The second rebuilding type (as below) sacrificed the second set of torpedo tubes for a third twin 4" to enhance the heavy AA weaponry.
