HMS Weymouth (1911)
Back to Commonwealth Ships List
The Royal Navy could never get enough cruisers for patrol duties. The new cruisers may have got the glamour postings like the Mediteranean while ships like the Weymouth type provided excellent service in what were secondary stations and routings but they still neede to be policed. The armament was reduced from 8 x 6" down to 3 then back to 5 x 6" as the various refits were carried out.
Based in places like Trincomalee, Aden, Singapore, Capetown/Durban, they provided the local escorts with a ship that would be able to deal with any disguised raiders it might run accross while it could yell for help and shadow anything to big for it to handle. Used as Escort cruisers they would house the Escort Commander. Fitted with ASDIC and depth charges they also made useful anti-submarine vessels.
