ARA L'Argentina (BB-1939)

Return to Argentine Ships

When the ship arrived in May 1939 it gave the Argentinians hope that they would finally have a ship to better the new Brazilian and Chilean ships built during the 1930's. Its sistership was due to arrive in 1940 but the Germanic States Navy completed it for their navy as the Argentinians were already close to surrendering at that time. These were beautiful big ships and designed as fast battleships of the new era rather than as upgrades of past designs (such as the original Scharnhorst and Bismarck types).

The ship matched the Hood in size but was bigger in protection due to the Germanic States use of new types of case hardened steel for armour and normal decking, Wh and Wz. The new armour gave about 20% more protection for the same depth of armour. While only armed with the very good 13.8" gun, there were twelve of them. The gun had a range over 40,000 yards and with the ships 30+ knot speed no ship of the time could 'maintain the range' to the L'Argentina. With 13.8" guns to the Brazilian new builds 13.5" the Argentinians were hoping that when the Brazilians became aware of the building of the ships that they would feel their ships were already as good as the L'Argentina type.

The ten twin 5.1" dual purpose secondary guns with the six AA directors showed the respect given to the rise of the aircraft. With lots of 37mm and 20mm light flak guns L'Argentina was as well protected against aircraft as they could make it.
