Mountain Class
Flotilla Leaders.
Return to Algarvian Navy page:
The Mountain class Flotilla Leaders ended up being quite an important class over
both wars. Designed to hold a Captain 'D' these ships were almost as big as
light cruisers being built only 10 or so years ago. While five 4" was not a huge
armament - since they were all on the centreline this made the armament almost
as good as some of the German broadside cruisers that had 10x4.1" - five down
each side.
Originally laid down as a class of five ships. With the outbreak of war and the
raspid expansion of orders for destroyers, the orders for leaders increased as
well. Eventually twelve of this type were built with two being lost in the North
Atlantic two U-Boats torpedoes in 1916-17. The other ten survived the war and
went on to serve in WW2.
With the 40 Stockton class, these ships were put together with 4 destroyers to
one leader. The ships went through many refits, but the most common by 1941 was
as shown below. The 4" had been refitted with AA mountings to give them a dual
purpose capability. The Q 4" mounting being removed and replaced with a twin
40mm in each beam mount with another mounted abaft the the rear funnel.
